In 1st order derivative filters, we detect the edge along with horizontal and vertical directions separately and then combine both. But using the Laplacian filter we detect the edges in the whole image at once. WebbThe filter works by identifying sharp edge boundaries in the image, such as the edge between a subject and a background of a contrasting color, and increasing the image contrast in the area immediately around the edge.
